Despite the rise of plant-based meat and ‘Veganuary,’ only 3 percent of Americans are vegan. It’s more than double that among African Americans.
A 2016 Pew Research Center survey found 3 percent of American adults overall identified as vegan and only 1 percent of Hispanic Americans. That number jumps to a startling 8 percent among African American adults. In Gallup’s latest findings on consumers’ meat-eating changes, which will be published Monday, whites reported eating 10 percent less meat in the past 12 months while people of color reported eating 31 percent less. Burger-oriented fast-food restaurants, overrepresented in low-income “food swamps,” are seen as opportunities to introduce plant-based options. Although market research firm NPD Group found almost 90 percent of the people eating non-meat burgers are not vegetarian or vegan, a 2018 Gallup poll found that Americans who earn less than $30,000 are almost twice as likely to be vegan or vegetarian as those who earn more than $75,000. Best Vegan Milk for CoffeeVegan milk is completely dairy-free, meaning it doesn’t originate from any animal and doesn’t contain any animal product. Instead, vegan milk is made from a variety of beans, nuts, seeds, and grains. Common sources for vegan milk are:
The reason for this is because vegan milks are made up of different proteins than dairy milks, and they are very sensitive to temperature change and acidity. Many vegan milks will curdle or separate in hot coffee, which can make for an unpleasant cup.

So what is vegan butter? And how does something that's totally dairy-free taste like it's straight from a cow? It turns out that vegan butter is actually a type of margarine, the imitation butter spread that your grandmother might've used. (Mine certainly did.) While butter is made from churning cream from a cow, margarine is made by mixing vegetable oils with water, salt, and emulsifiers until it's got the consistency of butter. Not all margarine is vegan, though. According to the US Department of Agriculture, in the United States, margarine must be at least 80 percent fat—but it can also include some milk and still be called margarine. Vegan butter therefore is a type of dairy-free margarine that's got all of the fat with none of the milk. One of the most popular brands of vegan butter is Earth Balance, which says it's vegan right on the packaging. But there are some brands of margarine that are dairy-free and therefore vegan without explicitly labeling themselves as such; Smart Balance Original Buttery Spread, for instance, is dairy-free albeit not marked vegan. Vegan burgers are among the most common vegetarian offerings in the restaurant business, but in many cases the veggie burger patty or bun will contain egg or dairy ingredients. However, Denny’s, Red Robin, and Johnny Rockets all sell vegan veggie burgers. Always be sure to request no mayo or cheese, since many restaurants will add it to their otherwise-vegan offering.
Okay so quickly we will post the not so sexy words...then you can watch the cool videos... A typical vegan veggie burger patty will contain grains, breadcrumbs, and minced veggies, plus some seitan (Vital Wheat Gluten) which provides a meaty chewiness.
